My rides from Cardiff to Newport use the lovely quiet Druidstone Road and Penylan Road, which drops you off at Bassaleg.

Coming into Cardiff from the west side (Dinas Powys) means that I have to traverse alot of Cardiff City Centre to reach Druidstone Road.

I tend to prefer the North side of Cardiff using Cyncoed Road onto Ty Draw Road, and finally St. Mellons Road.

From here there used to be a quiet ride south-east on Bridge Road and from there its a few hundred metres to Druidstone Road.

However when I attempted the journey yesterday 21st June, having not done it for a while , I had not appreciated the extensive amount of house building occuring in the St Mellons and Llanedeyrn areas of Cardiff. This had resulted in Bridge Road being closed from the St. Mellon's end.

Being so close to Druidstone Road, but not wanting to use the scary A4232 Link Road I initially struggled to find an alternative route that did not require a significant diversion.

Luckily I noticed a small path on the right just before the St. Mellons Road passes under the A4232 Link Road.  This easy-to-miss gap in the hedges leads into the top of the Cardiff Gate Retail Park.

And here is the entrance from the Retail Park (for the return journey !)  - also easily missed .

I assumed this was a footpath so pushed my bike along its short length.

Once into the Retail Park, I exited by Asda and then took great care when crossing the A4232 Link Road via the roundabout, to go to Church Road, LLanedeyrn.

From here, I  come across another large house building site !

Luckily the builders have put in a temporary right of way for pedestrians and cyclists, so form here it is possible to finally join up with Bridge Road.

The map below shows where Bridge Road is closed (Red Cross), and the alternative route I took (Blue Arrows)

Once onto Druidstone Road, the ride was fantastic as always , riding into Bassaleg.

Once I reach Bassaleg , my route into the centre of Newport focusses on remaining on the Bassaleg Road for as long as possible, and then dropping down to the Royal Gwent Hospital next to Belle Vue Park.  This is quite a pleasant route in the main,  and puts you on the main arterial B4237 route through Newport.

From here it is straighforward to continue west and on to Chepstow or North to Caerleon

The strava activity for this route (is is actually part of a longer ride to Chepstow) is Ride to Chepstow

If you have any alternative ways of reaching Druidstone Road from the west side of Cardiff please let me know, I will be keen to give them a try !
